  • In the last few years, Epidemiology has become an increasingly important approach in both public health and clinical practice. This epidemiology handbook was written with a view to strengthen education, training and research in the field of Epidemiology and Public health. The target audience for this book are the medical students as well as medical practitioners. The book comprises of two parts. The lectures are covered in sections I to III and the tutorial notes found under section IV.   • The term “Epidemiology” comes from the Greek word “Epidemoslogia” which stads for study (logia), upon (epi) people (demos).
  • In the last few years, Epidemiology has become an increasingly important approach in both public health and clinical practice.

  • The history of Epidemiology, the epidemic process and the forms of epidemic evolution are explained, together with examples regarding the applications of epidemiology.
  • Chapter II presents the main routes of transmission for infectious disease: respiratory, digestive,parenteral, sexual, vector-borne and health-care associated infections. Concepts and methods of epidemiology applied in emergency situations, during natural and social disasters, are explained under chapter III.
  • The tutorial notes, in chapter IV, covers the anti-epidemic activities: outbreak investigation; epidemic surveillance and control; principles of infection control in health-care facilities by methods of disinfection and sterilization and immunization strategies under national programs.
